What is ‘Bucky on Parade’?
Bucky on Parade is a free public art event that will bring approximately 100 life-size, fiberglass Bucky Badger statues to the streets of Madison and Dane County, May 7–September 12, 2018.
Local and regional artists will transform these Bucky Badger statues into unique works of art. The Madison Area Sports Commission is the producer of the event, with support from the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau and in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin Athletics, and Wisconsin Foundation & Alumni Association. Event proceeds will support Garding Against Cancer, Madison Area Sports Commission and other community charities.
What is Kathryn Schnabel’s idea?
Artist submissions for Bucky statues were required to have an idea and title for their artwork. This helped the judges and sponsors understand and visualize the artist concept. “Bright Idea Bucky” is the name of the statue that Kathryn will create in her Windy Garden Studio, located within Galleria 214 in downtown Cambridge, WI. Her statue is being sponsored by Capitol Lakes Retirement in Madison.
Kathryn offered the community the opportunity to write and draw their answer to the question ‘what bright idea can I contribute to the world?’ on fabric, which she is coloring and cutting into pieces to use as collage material for the statue. Due to the confidentiality agreement with the organizers, designs or work in progress pictures can't be shared right now. Stay tuned for info on the 'big reveal' party planned in May for all the statues!
What is the timing for this project?
The fabric sheets have been colored to match the design, and the fabric pieces are being glued all over Bucky. Work will continue in Windy Garden Studio until the statue is completed and returned to the Madison Area Sports Commission in early March. The public is welcome to watch the artwork in progress.
